The best advertisements I’ve seen in a while … simple, intelligent, elegant. The ultimate proof of media power and the influence that MTV has upon the young generation.

“This is more than thinking outside the box – we’re nowhere near the box.”

This is just the tip of the iceberg … more here.

Something wrong, very wrong … October 7, 2007

We live in a crazy world. Don’t believe me? Just have a look at the entertainment section of the magazines and newspaper you’re reading or skim the news on the Internet. For the past 6 months, every single day, you find a new article about Britney Spears. It doesn’t even matter if it’s true or not, it doesn’t matter if someone already wrote about it. All it matters is that Britney Spears has done something.

3110.jpg

Enough already, leave her alone. I’m not saying this I like her or because I think that the press goes too far and invades her privacy … no … I’m just sick and tired of anything that has to do with Britney. We all know she has a chaotic lifestyle, we all knows she’s not mature enough to be a mother, we all know she’s going through divorce and a fierce custody battle. It was fun at first watching her fall from grace, now it’s just boring and really annoying.

Britney Spears is crazy, no doubt about it. It’s like she’s going through a late adolescence. She forgot to wear lingerie in public, she shaved her head, she attacked the paparazzi with an umbrella, she spent a month in rehab, she lost her children due to habitual drug and alcohol usage. Every little detail has been covered by the tabloids. After all these and an infamously disastrous performance at the VMAs, you might think her career it’s over. Well, not quite. Once again she defies all logic and proves there’s no such as bad publicity. Her new single “Gimme more”, it’s the best selling song on several digital music stores, and in just 3 days it got from #68 to #3 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. I’m pretty sure that her new album will be a great commercial success, no matter how bad or good it’s going to be from an artistic perspective. Only in a sick society such a thing is possible … Britney Spears is now America’s favorite train wreck and at the same time America’s most successful artist. I’m sorry, but this is wrong, very wrong.

City of God … a stupendous chronicle of violence October 7, 2007

I watch a lot of movies, both indie flicks and Hollywood big budget fantasies, so there’s not much that impresses me. “City of God”, or “Cidade de Deus” in Portuguese, is however an extraordinary motion picture.

pict2.jpg

The movie is a captivating story of how crime affects the poor population of Rio de Janeiro. In the almost alien landscape of the slums, the only thing that really matters is whether you live or die, morality and law are relics of a dead society, or actually relics of a society that never really existed. The place is run by boys. Not teenagers, but 10 year olds that carry real weapons and kill people with real bullets.

The narrative focuses on the parallel life stories of two boys called Rocket and Li’l Dice. While both boys grow up in the same violent and atrocious environment, each takes a different path as the years go by. Li’l Dice changes his name to Li’l Zé and becomes the most violent gangsters in the City of God. Rocket it’s passioned about photography and he soon finds himself chronicling the violence of his environment.

The movie starts with a bang, and the action never slows down. The events unfold quickly in a cinematic and emotional tour de force. After all, this is the only option for a such a thrilling tale of violence having the tagline “If you run you’re dead…if you stay, you’re dead again. Period.“. Using a stylized mixture of realism and surrealism Kátia Lund and Fernando Meirelles, the directors, manage to take you, as a viewer, on an disturbing ride through the social drama of poverty and violence.

From stripping to quantum physics … just one easy step October 6, 2007

Geeks all around the world should rejoice …

I’m really into quantum physics. Some of my friends are into it, some of them aren’t, so I’m trying to get them excited about discovering all these interesting things about thoughts and the power of thoughts. It gives me chills thinking about it. It’s fun.

Carmen Electra

She was already amazing, now she’s even greater. She may not have discovered anything, but Carmen Electra definitely deserves a place in the modern physics hall of fame. She’s finally showing the world that just because you’re a super sexy blond bombshell, it doesn’t mean you’re not lusting after theoretical and experimental justifications for Schroedinger’s equation.

The Guardian, Saturday October 6 2007

Craig Venter, the controversial DNA researcher involved in the race to decipher the human genetic code, has built a synthetic chromosome out of laboratory chemicals and is going to announce the creation of the first new artificial life form on Earth.

The announcement, which is expected within weeks and could come as early as Monday at the annual meeting of his scientific institute in San Diego, California, will herald a giant leap forward in the development of designer genomes. It is certain to provoke heated debate about the ethics of creating new species and could unlock the door to new energy sources and techniques to combat global warming.

Mr Venter told the Guardian he thought this landmark would be “a very important philosophical step in the history of our species. We are going from reading our genetic code to the ability to write it. That gives us the hypothetical ability to do things never contemplated before.

Scientific breakthroughs like really this make you think. God is quickly becoming useless, just like any other imaginary childhood hero. Yet, why do people still choose to believe in fairy tales? I guess it’s nothing more than a stupid refusal to grow up and face reality …

Zune 2.0 is here … and it’s good October 3, 2007

Today Microsoft has officially announced Zune 2.

zune.jpg

The new Zune comes in two flash version, offering 4GB or 8GB of storage, and a 80GB HDD version. All of the players will have wireless sync capabilities, updated wireless sharing, an FM tuner, and the ability to display music, pictures, videos and podcasts. The previous controls have been replaced by a touch sensitive pad that allows users to navigate through the menus either by brushing or by clicking. Zune 4GB and Zune 8GB have a 1.8 inch screen, and will retail for $149.99, respectively $199.99. Zune 80GB has a 3.2 inch screen at $249.99.

It looks slick, the interface seems to be great and it’s priced just like the ipod … all in all, a great product that can easily compete with the ipod once the Zune Marketplace will get video content. What’s also great is that the first generation Zune will soon have all the features of the new generation with a simple firmware upgrade.

Apple should probably watch out and stop overestimating the brand loyalty of their customers or they might end up like Sony and their PS3.
